Driving can be hazardous under even the best of conditions. So what happens when the conditions aren't that great? When it's raining outside, driving can become even more dangerous than usual, and rate of auto accidents can rise.

While it may be best to stay off the roads until the rain subsides, that isn't always an option! That's why we've assembled a number of tips that will help you stay safe as you navigate the open road in bad weather conditions.

• Stay near the middle of the road. Most roads are slightly higher in the middle than on the outsides, so driving in the middle lanes can help you avoid driving through standing water or giant puddles that can be dangerous or bad for your vehicle.
• Keep your cruise control turned off. When you use cruise control, you often take some of your attention off the road (and your foot off the break). You need to be fully alert while driving in the rain in case you need to stop or slow down quickly.
• Maintain a good distance between you and the other vehicles. Leave adequate space between your car and the car ahead of you, and avoid driving right beside big vehicles like trucks. The spray or splashes from other vehicles can impede your vision.

• Don't slam on your brakes. Stopping short can be dangerous on slick roads. If you find yourself hydroplaning, you should slow down gradually until you have full control of your vehicle once again.
• Don't drive while distracted. This is even more important in rainy weather than it is during the rest of your time on the road. Put away the distractions and keep your full attention on the road and the other vehicles on it.
• Don't speed. Speeding can be especially dangerous when the roads are wet, because it's easier to lose control of your vehicle and more difficult to stop. Drive slower than you think you need to in order to make sure you stay safe.
